Indoor Industrial

Is your Wi-Fi holding you back rather than helping you? cellXica’s mobile radio equipment delivers better indoor coverage with lower latency, less cabling and fewer boxes.

We work with the leadership teams responsible for managing complex indoor industrial environments and networks such as factory automation, warehousing and logistics.

Our clients are typically owners or senior managers accountable for operational effectiveness, process improvement and legislative compliance. They’re focused on running the business better, trusting us to design and deliver integrated system solutions that meet their needs, exceed their expectations and improve business performance.

Industrial (factory) automation

Mechanisation and automation are central to industrial production. Automated machines, robots and devices operate reliably, at greater speeds, and to consistent standards, all while lowering lifetime costs. Staff welfare is improved by avoiding dangerous, repetitive or physically demanding tasks. And automated systems generate real-time production data, enabling better planning, faster decision-making, and continuous improvement.

  • Cellular technologies are intrinsically better suited than Wi-Fi to ‘noisy’ indoor environments containing metal structures, moving machinery and electrical interference
  • Private networks allow connected machines, robots and sensors to be deployed, scaled and reconfigured without costly rewiring
  • Mobile protocols provide strong authentication, encryption and traffic isolation, allowing critical production systems to be kept separate from public IT or guest networks
  • Cellular networks bridge factory-floor devices, edge, and cloud computing platforms, enabling remote analytics and support across physical locations

Warehouse automation

A foundational methodology, warehousing automation improves the speed, accuracy and reliability of indoor storage and fulfilment operations. Automated handling increases productivity, with integrated barcode scanning, RFID tagging and vision systems minimising picking and inventory errors. Higher racking and denser layouts increase capacity and optimise stock placement. Automated systems monitor inventory movements in real-time, providing accurate information for planning and customer service.

  • Cellular technologies are intrinsically better suited than Wi-Fi to ‘noisy’ indoor environments containing metal structures, moving machinery and electrical interference
  • Cellular’s broad coverage and low latency ensures mobile assets remain connected as they move and operate throughout the warehouse
  • Core network software prioritises critical control and safety traffic, ensuring the reliable operation of robots and automation systems even during peak activity
  • Mobile protocols provide strong authentication, encryption and traffic isolation, allowing critical production systems to be kept separate from public IT or guest networks
  • Cellular networks bridge factory-floor devices, edge, and cloud computing platforms, enabling remote analytics and support across physical locations

Logistics

By connecting assets, equipment, and people, cellular technologies have transformed logistics operations across the value chain. Private networks enable reliable mobile connectivity, real-time visibility, secure data exchange and scalable automation.

  • Private LTE and 5G deliver consistent coverage across large yards, ports, warehouses and transport hubs where distance, metal structures and RF interference can compromise Wi-FI
  • Cellular connectivity enables real-time tracking of vehicles, containers and assets across the supply chain, improving planning and minimising disruption
  • Real-time data from vehicles, plant sensors and handling equipment allows dynamic route optimisation, improved utilisation and proactive maintenance
  • Private cellular connectivity supports dedicated all-agency emergency communications, improving safety and regulatory compliance

Customer stories

Warehousing operations frequently turn to technology to lower costs and raise productivity. High-density racking optimises the use of space, for example. Bar code scanners speed up stock taking; Wi-Fi frees up staff and devices to roam.

But technologies don’t always play nicely together as one warehousing customer found out…

If barcode scanners are to perform quickly and without error then network coverage needs to be comprehensive and reliable. Yet warehouse racking’s steel lattice framework creates radio frequency interference, resulting in a high density of costly wired Wi-Fi access points if coverage is to be maintained.

Matching technologies to the environment is therefore key. In warehousing and logistics, cellular radio’s reach and range beats Wi-Fi, meaning that for one cellXica customer a private mobile cellular network was the answer.

Two cellXica M4Q LTE base stations, using Band 3 (1,800MHz) shared-access spectrum, provided complete coverage across a client’s warehouse, instantly making up to 50 Wi-Fi access points, their cable runs and switches redundant. And the M4Q’s single-cable PoE configuration kept installation disruption to a minimum.

With the private LTE network providing fast data rates and full indoor coverage, quick and accurate bar code scanning was assured, and faster, more reliable stock control the result.
